Position Overview

BayCare Medical Group, the leading physician-led medical group in the Tampa Bay area, is actively recruiting a Medical Director of Surgical Services.  This individual will provide visionary leadership and oversight to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered surgical care provided by all employed surgical providers of BayCare Medical Group (BMG). This role requires a dynamic and collaborative physician-surgeon leader to oversee multi-specialty surgical services for the medical group serving diverse clinical sites across the BayCare Health System. Working closely with stakeholders across the health system, the successful candidate will partner with their administrative and operational leader to align clinical operations with organizational strategic priorities, focusing on quality care, efficiency, and positive clinical outcomes. Additionally, the Medical Director will be a pivotal leader in developing integrated clinical programs which will require collaboration with BMG non-surgical providers, BayCare System leaders, as well as community providers. Doing so will be done by promoting a culture of inclusivity and teamwork,  ensuring the success of both current and future surgical leaders. The individual will also champion graduate medical education, clinical research, and mentorship of future surgeon leaders, fostering excellence throughout the healthcare system.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Operational Leadership

  • Oversee and direct all aspects of surgical service delivery by BayCare Medical Group to ensure high standards of patient care.
  • Develop and monitor clinical performance metrics to maintain efficiency and quality outcomes.
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to optimize workflows, reducing redundancy and enhancing patient throughput.
  • Ensure resource allocation and utilization align with organizational goals to support effective patient care delivery.
  • Promote evidence-based practices to drive consistency and quality across surgical specialties.

Recruitment, Talent Development, and Mentorship

  • Lead recruitment efforts to attract skilled, diverse surgical talent across all specialties.
  • Implement mentorship and professional development programs for surgeons, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop performance review and feedback processes to support clinicians’ growth and accountability.
  • Work closely with Team Resources (TR) and other departments to ensure retention of high-performing surgical staff.

Strategic Program Development and Partnership

  • Partner with executive and operational leaders at BMG and throughout the larger BayCare Health System to identify and prioritize new surgical service lines and clinical programs.
  • Drive the integration of surgical services across sites to provide seamless, high-quality patient experiences.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with community and health system stakeholders to advance program goals.
  • Contribute to strategic planning initiatives that align with the organization’s mission and expand the scope of surgical services.

Safety and Compliance Oversight

  • Ensure adherence to all regulatory and accreditation standards across surgical services.
  • Lead the development of safety protocols and monitor compliance to foster a culture of patient safety.
  • Oversee risk management and quality assurance activities, implementing improvements as necessary.
  • Collaborate with infection control, quality improvement, and compliance teams to address any identified issues.

Collaboration with Leadership Teams

  • Act as a liaison between surgical teams and other clinical and administrative departments.
  • Participate actively in health system leadership meetings and contribute to broader organizational strategies.
  • Promote open communication among teams, ensuring alignment with shared objectives.
  • Partner with finance, operations, and human resources to achieve resource optimization and organizational goals.

Education and Research

  • Advocate for and support graduate medical education, integrating trainees effectively into surgical programs.
  • Promote a culture of research and inquiry, encouraging participation in clinical studies.
  • Mentor faculty members and surgical trainees, fostering future leaders in surgery.
  • Collaborate with academic institutions to enhance educational and research initiatives.

Qualifications

Certification and Licensure Requirements

  • Must possess a valid medical degree (M.D. or equivalent) and board certification in a relevant surgical specialty.
  • Active medical license in the state of Florida is required.
  • Advanced degrees in management, business, or a related field or experience (e.g., MBA, MPH) are preferred.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Medical Doctorate (M.D. or equivalent) required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of clinical experience in surgical practice.
  • Minimum of 5 years of administrative and leadership experience in a healthcare setting, with experience overseeing multi-specialty surgical programs preferred.
