Position Overview

BayCare Medical Group, the leading physician-led medical group in the Tampa Bay area, is actively recruiting a Medical Director of  Hospital Medicine. The Medical Director of Hospital Medicine serves as the clinical and administrative leader of the hospital medicine program across multiple inpatient care sites. This individual is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, team-based care aligned with evidence-based standards and strategic system goals. In addition to leading the core hospitalist program, this role provides oversight of palliative care and neurohospitalist services. The position works in close collaboration with health system executives, nursing leadership, and clinical departments to advance operational excellence, workforce development, and integrated care models.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Quality and Clinical Excellence

  • Ensure consistent, safe, high-quality care using evidence-based guidelines and nationally accepted clinical pathways.
  • Promote a high reliability organization (HRO) mindset, driving a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and transparency.
  • Collaborate with nursing, quality, and specialty care leaders to align workflows and protocols to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Drive performance in clinical quality, safety, throughput, patient experience, and documentation integrity.
  • Integrate care delivery across hospital sites while tailoring to local needs.

Team Leadership and Workforce Management

  • Recruit, hire, and retain top-tier physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Provide clinical mentorship, performance coaching, and career development for providers.
  • Foster a culture of psychological safety, equity, and collaboration across sites.
  • Support well-being and professional engagement to enhance retention and resilience.
  • Promote strong team dynamics, shared goals, and aligned communication.

 Operational Management

  • Collaborate with administrative partners to manage daily operations, including provider scheduling, staffing models, and workflow optimization.
  • Standardize handoffs, admissions/discharge processes, and coordination of care with ED and specialty services.
  • Ensure timely completion of clinical documentation, discharge summaries, and regulatory/compliance standards.
  • Align hospitalist services with inpatient flow initiatives and capacity management.
  • Maintain strong presence in clinical areas to support real-time issue resolution and team support.

Strategic Vision and Integration

  • Partner with executive and clinical leadership to advance innovative models of care and integrated delivery.
  • Identify opportunities for clinical program expansion, cross-site integration, and system-wide alignment.
  • Leverage data, trends, and frontline feedback to drive strategy that supports growth, value, and evidence based medicine.
  • Champion initiatives that improve interdisciplinary collaboration, efficiency, and patient-centered outcomes.
  • Serve as a key thought leader in developing sustainable, high-value care models for hospital based services.

 Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Academic Integration

  • Serve as faculty or faculty liaison at sites with GME programs, especially internal medicine and transitional year residencies.
  • Support the development, mentoring, and scholarly engagement of faculty members.
  • Cultivate a strong learning environment and role-model professionalism for residents and students.
  • Collaborate with program directors to integrate hospitalist services into educational experiences while maintaining service excellence.

 Extended Service Line Oversight

In addition to hospital medicine, the Medical Director provides clinical oversight and alignment for:

  • Palliative Care Services – fostering access, standardization, and collaboration with inpatient teams.
  • Neurohospitalists – ensuring integration with both hospital medicine and neurology service lines.
    Responsibilities for these services mirror the expectations for quality, team-based leadership, and operational excellence.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • MD or DO with board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine (Hospitalist focus).
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Florida
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in hospital medicine.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in hospital or medical group setting.
  • Strong knowledge of value-based care, high-reliability practices, and inpatient operations.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across disciplines and lead diverse teams.
